Description

Coalseam Conservation Park, located in the Shire of Mingenew, Western Australia, is a geological masterpiece.

It is known for its diverse range of flora and fauna, serving as a refuge for threatened species in the Wheatbelt region. The park is unique as one of the few places on earth where coal can be seen on the surface. Additionally, it is renowned for its stunning spring wildflowers, offering a vibrant display of colors.

The park's geological history is evident in the exposed local rock, which showcases a cross section of the earth's past. With the presence of Holmwood Shale, High Cliff sandstone, Irwin River Coal Measures, Victoria Plateau Sandstone, and Laterite, Coalseam Conservation Park provides a fascinating opportunity for nature and history enthusiasts to gain unique insights.

The history of Coalseam Conservation Park is rich and intriguing. It held great traditional value for the Aboriginal people who initially inhabited the area. In 1846, the first coal deposits in Western Australia were discovered there. The location was declared a reserve for mining purposes and became the site of the colony's first coal mine. The Johnson mine shaft, a remnant of the coal mine, is still visible today. The area later transitioned to farming, displacing the local Aboriginal people from their land. In 1978, it became a nature reserve under the administration of the Shire of Mingenew and was officially designated as a conservation park in 1994.
