The gardens were redesigned by head gardener William Sangster, featuring a formal pleasure garden and areas for growing almonds, vegetables, and fruit. The property was purchased by Charles Armytage in 1864 and remained in the Armytage family for 95 years. It was sold to the National Trust of Australia in 1959.

It is open to the public Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. Guided tours of the historic house are available on weekends. The gardens have maintained their original nineteenth-century design and are frequently used for music concerts, fairs, picnics, and other events.
