Cow Rocks

Tourist attractions

Description

Cow Rocks, only 500 metres west of Hillarys Boat Harbour, is the chain of reefs lying one kilometre offshore in Marmion Marine Park.

Cow Rocks consist of two small reefs which are easily found, as each has a peak rising one metre about sea level. These can be seen as soon as you leave Hillarys Boat Harbour. Boats should be careful, however, not to anchor on the rich seagrass beds around this reef.

To really appreciate this area, it is suggested that you treat each lump as a separate dive and carry a dive torch with you. The eastern lump is scarred with other small caves and crevices. The invertebrate life here is abundant.

The western lump has many interconnected caves, ledges and swim-throughs which demand further exploration. To explore this area, it is suggested that you proceed in an anti-clockwise direction from the broken reef on the northwest.

• Do not dive when there is a moderate swell and wind greater than 15 knots.
