It serves as the regional center for the coastal villages of Callala Bay, Callala Beach, Currarong, and Orient Point. Culburra Surf Beach has become a popular destination for holidaymakers seeking a peaceful getaway, known for its oysters, fishing, and prawning. The area features two stunning surf beaches, Culburra Beach and Warrain Beach, offering different surf conditions and scenic attractions. Visitors can engage in various activities such as swimming, body surfing, and surfing, with both beaches patrolled over the summer holiday period.

Culburra is also home to the annual Burradise Festival, celebrating local arts, Aboriginal culture, live music, skateboarding, regional foods, markets, crafts, and makers. Originally named Wheelers Point, the town was renamed Culburra in 1916, derived from an Aboriginal word meaning "sand." Postal services were provided from Warrain Beach Post Office, later renamed Culburra Beach. The town's first school was the Roseby Park Aboriginal School, which opened in 1903 and became a public school in 1906. The modern street plan of Culburra Surf Beach is often attributed to Walter Burley Griffin, but it was actually the work of local developer Henry Halloran.
