Description
Customs House is a heritage-listed building located at 427 Queen Street in Brisbane City, Queensland, Australia.
It was designed by Charles H McLay and built from 1886 to 1889 at a cost of £38,346 by John Petrie & Son. The building was originally used for the collection of customs duty and was opened in 1889, replacing the original Customs House located at Petrie Bight. Customs House is a fine example of Victorian Free Classical style, with its grand colonnades and portico, and a dome which still manages to be a prominent feature of the Brisbane skyline. Today, Customs House is a popular venue for corporate and private functions. The venue features a riverside restaurant with a relaxed dining terrace, serving Modern Australian cuisine. The restaurant is elegant and offers beautiful views of the Brisbane River. The menu features a variety of dishes, including seafood, steak, and vegetarian options. The wine list is extensive, with a range of Australian and international wines available. The venue also offers a range of function spaces, including the Long Room, the River Room, and the Courtyard. These spaces can accommodate a variety of events, from weddings and corporate events to cocktail parties and product launches. Inside the structure, Customs House features black and white marble floors, ornate plasterwork, and a grand staircase. The building has been beautifully restored and is operated by The University of Queensland. Visitors can take a guided tour of the building to learn more about its history and architecture. The building is also a popular spot for photography, with its grand architecture and beautiful river views.
