Description
Duranbah Beach, also known as Flagstaff Beach, is a popular destination for surfers seeking the perfect wave.
It is located in the Tweed Shire, between the Tweed River and the Point Danger headland. The beach stretches for approximately 350 meters, with vegetated dunes running along nearly 200 meters.
Surfers and bodyboarders flock to Duranbah Beach for its high-quality and powerful surf break. The beach faces east, providing high wave energy and longshore rates. Waves typically come from the south-easterly direction but can originate from any seaward direction. The average wave height is 1.3 meters, but during king tides, it can reach up to six meters.
At the southern end of Duranbah Beach, visitors can find BBQs, sheltered picnic areas, and a block of toilets with hot showers. This makes it an ideal spot for enjoying a picnic with family and friends.
Duranbah Beach has a history of hosting high-profile international surfing and bodyboarding competitions. Notable events include the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast and various national and international bodyboarding contests.
In 1956, Jack Evans established the Snapper Rocks Sea Baths at Duranbah Beach. The baths included a shark pool for public viewing newline.
