Description

The Echuca Heritage Walk is an outdoor walking tour that showcases the thriving industrialised trade period of Echuca during the late 1800s.

It is a National heritage site that is based on the era when Echuca was ruled by rail and river, including the thriving Murray river trade and an influx in population. The tour is 900 meters in distance and is a great way to explore Echuca's rich history, architecture and culture.

The tour starts at the Former Victorian Railway Engine House and takes you along the banks of the Murray river to the Port of Echuca, passing several significant heritage structures. You will be able to listen out for the sounds of Paddlesteamers along the river and the hoofs of the horse-drawn carriages as you wander through the buildings and heritage structures. The tour includes various buildings and structures such as the Henry Hopwood Store, the iconic Port of Echuca, and Heritage Esplanade, as well as the Former Police Station which now holds the Historical Society Museum.

One of the highlights of the Echuca Heritage Walk is the Port of Echuca Wharf, which is an example of the Murray River Trade and a unique surviving structure from the late 19th century. The port precinct itself is home to a fleet of Paddlesteamers, which serve as a unique example of the Murray river trade system and are a memorable tourist attraction that is iconic to Echuca's heritage.
