Description
Ellery Creek Big Hole is a spectacular waterhole located 80km west of Alice Springs.
It is accessible via Larapinta and Namatjira Drives and is famous for swimming, camping, walking, and picnics. The waterhole is carved out by the mighty Ellery Creek and offers amazing geology.
To reach Ellery Creek Big Hole, visitors should be aware that the last 2km of the road is unsealed and can become impassable after heavy rain. It is recommended to check the forecast temperatures before visiting, as the Northern Territory can experience very hot temperatures, especially between October and April. The Top End can also have high humidity, causing visitors to tire quickly.
Swimming at Ellery Creek is a popular activity, with the permanent waters just a 5-minute walk from the car park. Visitors should also be mindful of submerged logs and rocks and avoid jumping, diving, or swinging into the water.
Camping facilities are available at Ellery Creek Big Hole for tents, trailers, and caravans. Gas barbecues and toilets are provided, but visitors need to bring their own drinking water. It is important to note that Ellery Creek Big Hole is a category B campsite, and booking and payment must be made online before visiting.
There are two main walks from Ellery Creek: Ellery Creek Dolomite and the more challenging 32km Ellery Creek Loop Walk that partly joins the Larapinta Trail. Visitors should choose a walk based on their level of ability and fitness.
