Description

Glacier Rock, also known as Selwyn's Rock, is a 500 million-year-old boulder located in Inman Valley that is highly recommended for geology enthusiasts.

It was carried by a glacier from the Victor Harbor area during a period when the south coast was covered by a massive glacial ice sheet about 250 million years ago. The rock's surfaces bear grooves, scratches, and crescent-shaped marks, providing significant evidence of ice movement and creating a fascinating sight to explore.

The first recorded discovery of Glacier Rock by Europeans was in 1859 by geologist A.R.C. Selwyn, leading to the first documented account of glaciations in Australia. Later, in 1897, geologist Sir David Edgeworth and Dr. Walter Howchin rediscovered the rock, with Dr. Albert Terrones from Mexico identifying it as one of the world's largest glacial exposures, gaining global recognition as a famous geological site.

Glacier Rock is a popular destination for visitors and attracts geologists from around the world. The best time to observe the grooves and scratches on its surface is during the winter months when the light is low. It is recommended to visit with a local guide for a better understanding of the geology and to enhance the sightseeing experience. Guided tours are available to learn about the area's geology, and visitors can also enjoy picnics, hikes, and photography.

While Glacier Rock can be visited throughout the year, the optimal time to go is during the Australian winter months of June to August. These months offer milder temperatures and better lighting conditions, ensuring a more enjoyable and comfortable experience when observing the grooves and scratches on the rock surface.
