Description
Glebe Park is a public park located on the eastern side of Civic, Canberra.
It covers an area of 4.7 hectares and has an interesting history dating back to the early 1840s. One of the notable features of the park is Glebe House, which was built in 1871-3 as a rectory for St. John's church. The park contains nearly seven hundred trees, including over five hundred English elms planted by Reverend Pierce Galliard Smith. Glebe Park was proclaimed a public park in 1983 after a community campaign to save the trees. It features formal landscaping, including fences, gates, paths, a rotunda, and a playground. The park has ten gates named after historic people or places and its southern boundary is the National Convention Centre. With its expansive lawns, gardens, and play areas, Glebe Park is an important site for the community and a popular destination for outdoor activities.
