Christmas Island, nicknamed "Galapagos of the Indian Ocean," is a remote island located approximately 2,750 km from the Australian mainland.
This island, known for its red crabs, sea birds, whale sharks, and spectacular coral reefs, is a melting pot of cultures, including Chinese, Malay, and European. Greta Beach is one of the picturesque beaches on this island. It has rock cliffs and stacks shaped by rough big swells and is a nesting beach for turtles.
Christmas Island National Park encompasses nearly two-thirds of the island and is a key highlight for visitors. Here, one can explore verdant rainforests, volcanic cliffs, hidden beaches, and endemic wildlife. The Hughs Dale Waterfall Walk, an easy stroll along a raised boardwalk, is the most popular trail. This island is well known for its incredible birdlife, with an estimated 80,000 seabirds nesting here annually. Divers and snorkelers can encounter gentle whale sharks. Greta Beach is a stunning picturesque beach of rock cliffs and stacks shaped by rough big swells. Visitors can collect flotsam and jetsam, which can help clean up the beach.
Christmas Island has a year-round tropical climate, with wet and dry seasons. The temperature is warm all year round, with average lows of 22°C and average highs of 28°C. The dry season, from late spring to summer (November to February), is ideal for bushwalking. The annual migration of red crabs to the sea to spawn in mid-November and mid-December is a must-see.
