Gulaga Mountain Walk

Gulaga Mountain Walk Tilba Tilba is a historic volcano and sacred site for Aboriginal women.

The hike takes you to the top of this ancient volcanic mountain, which holds cultural significance to the Yuin women of the South Coast of NSW. The trail, built in 1894 for gold miners, is now a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

The hike to the summit of Gulaga Mountain is a five-hour return hike that showcases a diverse landscape of rainforests, granite tors, and stunning coastal views. Starting at the car park near a café in Tilba Tilba, the gravel path leads up the mountain. Along the way, you can explore the Battery Trail, which takes you to the foundations of the mine manager's residence, providing insight into the region's gold-mining history.

After visiting Halfway Rock and the Battery Trail, return to the main track and continue the ascent. After 30 minutes, you'll reach "The Saddle," a rest spot surrounded by massive granite tors in the rainforest. Take breaks, enjoy the views, and rest before continuing towards the summit.

The final push to the summit is challenging but rewarding. Once you reach the top, you'll be greeted with a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding landscapes, including rolling hills, forested valleys, and the expansive coastline.

This hike is suitable for experienced hikers with a moderate to high level of fitness. The trail is 14 kilometers return and classified as hard.
