Description

Gwydir Wetlands State Conservation Area (SCA) is located 60 kilometres northwest of Moree in New South Wales.

Despite being only 15% of its former extent, the wetlands are home to at least 75 waterbird species, including 50 breeding species. Portions of the wetlands were listed under the International Ramsar Wetlands Agreement in 1998 to preserve them for future generations.

The Gwydir Wetlands SCA is a popular destination for bird watching enthusiasts. The 'Waterbird Lagoon' bird hide provides an ideal location to observe wetlands birdlife. The wetlands are home to threatened and endangered birds, as well as migratory species. Visitors can observe these birds from the bird hide or by walking along the track. Canoeing is also an option, but arrangements need to be made with the National Parks and Wildlife Service. The best time to visit is during the dry seasons, particularly in June, July, and August.

To reach the Gwydir Wetlands SCA, visitors can drive or use public transportation. By car, they should take the Gwydir Highway out of Moree towards Biniguy Road, then turn right onto Biniguy Road and continue for 33km. In conclusion, the Gwydir Wetlands SCA is an important wildlife sanctuary in Northern New South Wales, attracting bird watching enthusiasts throughout the year. Visitors can appreciate the natural beauty of the wetlands and observe various bird species, some of which are unique to this area. Whether walking or paddling, the experience will be memorable.
