Description
The Horizontal Falls, also known as Garaanngaddim, are located in the McLarty Ranges within Talbot Bay, part of the Buccaneer Archipelago in Western Australia's Kimberley region.
These falls are created by the tidal flow through two narrow gorges, measuring 20 meters and 10 meters wide respectively. With a tidal range of up to 10 meters, the water builds up on one side, creating a powerful waterfall up to 4 meters high. The direction of the falls changes with each turn of the tide. Visitors can experience a thrilling boat ride through the falls with various tour operators.
The Lalang-garram / Horizontal Falls Marine Park encompasses the falls and its surrounding areas, providing protection for its unique environment. This protected area is located in the Kimberly region and is part of the larger Kimberley Marine Park. The park consists mainly of Multiple Use Zone and also includes sections of national park and Habitat Protection zones.
The boat was conducting a tour of the Horizontal Falls natural phenomenon, located approximately 250km north-east of Broome. The Royal Flying Doctor Service immediately mobilized six aircraft to the scene, with a triage zone set up near the Koolan Island iron ore mine. Of the 28 passengers, 18 were taken to Perth with injuries ranging from broken bones to head injuries. The remote location of the falls and the presence of box jellyfish and estuarine crocodiles made the rescue operation more challenging.
