Description

Discover the Innamincka Regional Reserve, located in the north-east of South Australia, which includes the charming town of Innamincka.

This protected area was established on 22 December 1988 under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972. Covering a parcel of land formerly part of the Innamincka Pastoral Lease, the reserve was aimed at recognizing the area as "a place of major conservation importance" while continuing mining and agricultural activities. Innamincka Regional Reserve was the first "multiple-use reserve to be administered by a nature conservation agency" under the category of regional reserve defined in the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972.

A beautiful part of the reserve is partly situated on land that was listed on the List of Wetlands of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention, known as Coongie Lakes in 1987. The Innamincka Regional Reserve gained further importance in 2005 when a parcel of land was removed to create the national park, now called Malkumba-Coongie Lakes National Park.

Innamincka Regional Reserve also encompasses the Innamincka/Cooper Creek state heritage area, rich in culture and history.

This regional reserve is classified as an IUCN Category VI protected area, protecting species and ecosystems across the region. From stunning wetlands to unique cultural landmarks, the Innamincka Regional Reserve is a must-visit destination for all nature lovers seeking to discover the South Australian outback.
