Island Sanctuary

Island Sanctuary Deniliquin is a four-hectare natural bushland island located adjacent to the main street of Deniliquin.

It is preserved in its natural condition and boasts unique native flora and fauna, including kangaroos and over 100 varieties of birdlife.

The sanctuary offers a winding walking track that leads to scenic views of red gum bushland. It is also part of the Beach to Beach walk, from McLean Beach along the river to Willoughby’s Beach. Visitors can enjoy a picnic on the grassy spots or picnic tables available, and the sanctuary is pet-friendly as long as dogs are kept on a leash.

In addition to its natural environment, the sanctuary contains historical sites, including the burial site of 'Old Jack', who suffered at the hands of the notorious Melville gang of bushrangers in 1851.

Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre offers guided cultural tours of the sanctuary, where visitors can learn about the significance of flora and its traditional uses. The tours also provide an opportunity to view a scarred tree. To book a tour, visitors can call ahead on 03 5881 3312.

The Island Sanctuary is a great place to visit throughout the year, with the best time being during spring and autumn when the weather is mild and nature is at its best. It is easily accessible by car, foot, or bike, with a footbridge leading from the footpath or street parking available.
