Description
If you're looking for an outback adventure in New South Wales, then Jump-Up Loop Road Drive in Sturt National Park is the perfect destination.
This exhilarating self-guided 110km round trip from Tibooburra to Olive Downs and back via Silver City Highway takes you through a variety of landscapes, typical of Wangkumara country. The drive showcases some of the most beautiful landscapes in the outback. You'll drive past distinctive granite tors near Tibooburra, through rolling downs and gibber plains before reaching the iconic Jump-Ups in the north. The vast Australian desert is showcased in all its glory, and there are plenty of opportunities to stop and marvel at the scenery, including at lookout points and rest areas.
Along the route, there are plenty of activities to keep you entertained. The bird hides at Mount King Tank and South Myers Tank are excellent for birdwatching. Jump-Up walking track provides an opportunity to stretch your legs and soak in the vast desert views. And if you're interested in history, then the remains of Mount King Station are worth exploring.
If you want to spend more time in the outback and experience an outback sunset and clear starry skies, set up camp at Olive Downs campground. The campground is conveniently located on the route and is an ideal base for further exploring the area.
The best time to visit Jump-Up Loop Road Drive is during the cooler months (April-September) when the temperatures are more comfortable. It's best to avoid visiting during the peak summer months when temperatures can reach over 40°C.
Tibooburra is the starting point of the drive, and it's easily accessible by car. From there, follow the Silver City Highway to Olive Downs
