Description
Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park, formerly known as The Breakaways Reserve or The Breakaways, is a protected area in northern South Australia.
The park is named after the mesas and low hills that appear to have broken away from the higher ground of the escarpment. The Antakirinja Matuntjara Yankunytjatjara People consider the area significant and named it Umoona, meaning "long life." The park is managed by the Department of Environment, Water, and Natural Resources in collaboration with the Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara Aboriginal Corporation and the District Council of Coober Pedy.
The park experiences a desert climate, similar to Coober Pedy, with cool nights and extremely hot days. Summer temperatures can reach over 45 °C (113 °F).
Access to the main lookout is available via a 5 km dirt road from the Stuart Highway or the Dog Fence Scenic Tourist Drive Road. Visitors can also opt for a 65.8 km circuit by mountain bike from Coober Pedy, following the Stuart Highway to the Breakaways, then along the dog fence track, and returning to Coober Pedy via the Oodnadatta Track. Guided tours are available from Coober Pedy, and self-guided visits are possible with a permit obtained from the Tourist Information Centre in the District Council Office on Hutchinson Street, Coober Pedy. The permit costs A$10 per vehicle ($8 concession).
