Description
The Pioneer Park Nature Walk in Karoonda is a one-kilometre walk that is perfect for nature lovers.
It starts from a car park on the northwestern side of Pioneer Park, the town's main historical attraction. During the walk, visitors can enjoy the natural scrubland and see a variety of local mallee trees, including seven different species that flower at different times of the year. Other flora to look for include the quandong, callistris, melaleuca, acacia, and allocasuarina. A small section of the walk passes through Pioneer Park itself, where visitors can explore historic railway carriages, a pioneer church, farmhouse, and post and telephone office. The walk is located within Karoonda Nature Park, next to Pioneer Park, and is recommended for a morning or afternoon visit.
The Centenary Walk in Karoonda commemorates the pioneers who settled in the area. It was unveiled in 2011 to honor the centenary of the sinking of the first water bore in the district. The walk features a series of pavers leading up to a windmill structure and provides an opportunity to learn about the town's beginnings and how the first water bore helped the settlers. It is also a convenient way to take a quick stroll and stretch your legs during your travels. The Centenary Walk is located near the town's central business district and is easily accessible for visitors traveling by car. Karoonda is approximately 150 kilometres east of Adelaide.
