Description

Kerosene Creek is a natural hot spring located in Waiotapu, New Zealand, approximately 35 minutes south of Rotorua.

The creek is formed where a hot spring and freshwater stream meet, and the hot water from the spring bubbles up into the cool waters of the creek, creating pleasantly warm waters. Swimmers have piled up small smooth rocks to create little hot pools beside the 2-meter waterfall. The creek is set amongst lush native bush, adding to the natural beauty of the area.

There is no admission charge to visit Kerosene Creek, and visitors are encouraged to be courteous to other bathers and take any rubbish away with them. To get to Kerosene Creek, follow State Highway 5 south from Rotorua towards Taupo for about 30km. After passing the turnoff to Murupara on your left and Lake Ngahewa on your right, turn left onto Old Waiotapu Rd. Follow this gravel road for 2.2 km (about 3 minutes) until you see a grass verge on the right, where you can park. The road can be windy, bumpy, and laden with potholes, so care should be taken while driving.

Kerosene Creek is surrounded by impressive hydrothermal features, making it one of the easiest hot springs to visit in the area. The creek is free to visit, and after a brief walk, visitors can hop in a steaming stream and soak in a pool below a short waterfall. The creek is named Kerosene Creek for the harsh smell that emanates from the water, but visitors can forgive the smell as they relax in the refreshing hot pool. Kerosene Creek is a true geothermal gem, giving visitors a serene connection to the raw beauty of New Zealand's pristine nature as they soak in the steamy waters, gazing up to the towering forest canopy. Whether looking for a place to unwind in the afternoon or a unique natural experience, Kerosene Creek is a must-visit destination. Visitors can also check out the nearby Waiotapu Geothermal Wonderland, located just a short distance away.
