Description

Kilsby Sinkhole is a naturally formed karst sinkhole located near Mount Gambier in South Australia.

Owned by the Kilsby family since the late 19th century, it now allows limited recreational diving and snorkelling with controlled access.

The sinkhole is a popular destination for both recreational and professional divers. It has been used for diving training since the late 1960s and offers a depth of 70 meters, providing an adventurous experience. The crystal-clear water and unique limestone formations make it a preferred spot for divers of all levels. Various aquatic life, including crayfish, eels, perch, and turtles, can also be observed while diving.

Despite its popularity, Kilsby Sinkhole has a tragic history due to fatal diving accidents. Inexperienced divers have contributed to six deaths since 1969. As a result, access to the site is highly controlled. Commercial dive companies offer training programs, and limited independent recreational diving and snorkelling are allowed. Strict rules and rigorous training are in place to ensure safety. Access is limited to authorized individuals and groups due to the site being located on private property and insurance and liability concerns.

Despite its challenging past, Kilsby Sinkhole remains a thrilling dive site that attracts divers from around the world. Its unique geological features and diverse aquatic life make it a must-visit spot for diving enthusiasts.
