Konongwootong Reservoir in Coleraine is a stunning natural location that is famous for its Aboriginal heritage, providing numerous opportunities for fishing, walking, and bird watching.
It was built in 1926 to supply water to the townships of Casterton and Coleraine, and it has come to serve multiple purposes over the years.
Fishing is one of the most popular activities at Konongwootong Reservoir, and the reservoir is stocked with rainbow and brown trout annually. The reservoir sits on spring-fed streams and is immune to the effects of drought, making it an excellent freshwater fishing site.
Walking enthusiasts will love the all-abilities walking path and access for fishing available at the main entrance via Reservoir Road – the path cuts across a natural amphitheatre and is flanked by a picturesque wetlands area. The trail is ideal for families and individuals of all fitness levels and is an excellent way to enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
The area is dominated by stands of mature pine trees and has rich flora and fauna, making it an ideal spot for bird watching. The reservoir plays host to numerous migratory bird species that depend on its waters for survival and continue to depend on the reservoir for food and shelter throughout the year.
Konongwootong Reservoir has significant Aboriginal cultural heritage values and is currently registered on the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Register. The Gunditj people have relied on the area and its resources for thousands of years, as evidenced by the abundant natural wetlands with pools of water in winter, and springs and water soaks in summer.
