Description
Cooya Beach, also known as Kuyu Kuyu, is a traditional fishing ground of the Kuku Yalanji people, located just a 15-minute drive north of Port Douglas in Australia.
Visitors can join an Aboriginal-owned and guided tour with Kuku Yalanji Cultural Habitat Tours to experience the rich cultural heritage of the Kuku Yalanji people.
The Kuku Yalanji Cultural Habitat Beach Walk tour includes a beach, mudflat, and mangrove walk with one of the Kubirri Warra brothers. Established in 1999, this tour is led by Traditional Custodians who explain the cultural importance of the area and introduce guests to traditional fishing activities like spearfishing. Visitors will learn about the traditional uses of plants and animals, as well as the history and culture of the Kuku Yalanji people.
This is when the weather is warm and sunny, with less chance of rain. It's important to check the tide times before booking, as the tour is tide-dependent.
To get to Cooya Beach, simply drive north from Port Douglas for about 15 minutes. There is parking available at the Cooya Beach car park, where visitors will meet their guide.
The Kuku Yalanji Cultural Heritage Beach Walk at Cooya Beach is an educational travel destination that allows visitors to learn about the rich cultural heritage of the Kuku Yalanji people and experience their traditional fishing activity in a beautiful natural setting. It is a unique experience that should not be missed.
