Description
Lake Beeac is a hypersaline endorheic lake located near the small town of Beeac in the Lakes and Craters region of the Victorian Volcanic Plains of south-west Victoria.
Despite its high salinity, the lake supports a variety of brine shrimp which provide sustenance to several water birds such as the banded stilt, the red-necked avocet, and other wetland water birds.
Lake Beeac boasts an arid environment due to the excess of salt in its waters, but its unique ecosystem provides a habitat for a diverse range of flora and fauna. The Ramsar-listed Western District Lakes site recognizes the importance of Lake Beeac, affirming its value and protection as an internationally significant wetland area. BirdLife International has identified the lake as part of the Lake Corangamite Complex Important Bird Area, drawing birds from all over the world.
Lake Beeac has a rich history of salt mining, with commercial production dating back to the late 1860s. Salt works in Lake Beeac and surrounding lakes found success in producing salt for domestic consumption and industrial purposes. The lake's history lives on in the remnants of the old salt works and in the thriving wetland ecosystem it offers. Visitors can enjoy bird watching, picnicking, and the serene environment of Lake Beeac.
