Lake Bumbunga

Lake Bumbunga is a pink salt lake located in the Mid North of South Australia, between the town of Lochiel and the farming locality of Bumbunga.

It covers an area of over 15 sq km and is known for its seasonal pink coloration.

The lake's name, Bumbunga, comes from the local Aboriginal language (Kaurna) and means "rain water lake." It is the largest lake in a system of saline lakes in the area.

The pink hue of Lake Bumbunga is caused by a type of algae that thrives in its high salinity. The color can change depending on factors such as fresh water influx and sunlight. In summer, a large portion of the lake dries up.

Salt has been harvested from Lake Bumbunga since 1881, providing employment and economic benefits. Cheetham Salt Limited currently owns the lake leases and continues to harvest salt.

Lake Bumbunga has become a popular tourist attraction in recent years due to its pinkish hues. Visitors can spot a fibreglass sculpture called the "Loch-Eel" monster in the middle of the lake. There is also a walking trail around the lake for visitors to enjoy the scenic view.

The lake has been used in advertising campaigns by various brands and has served as a filming location for TV series and fashion shoots.
