Description
Lake McKenzie is a famous natural site located on Fraser Island in Queensland, Australia.
Its awe-inspiring beauty makes it one of the most visited tourist attractions on the island. This ‘perched’ lake is unique in that it contains only rainwater, no groundwater, is not fed by streams and does not flow to the ocean. The sand and organic matter at the base of the lake form an impervious layer, preventing rainwater from draining away. The sand at Lake McKenzie is pure, white silica and acts as a filter, making the water incredibly clear and pure.
The blues and greens of Lake McKenzie are endlessly fascinating and make for a breathtaking sight. Visitors can walk along the soft and smooth silica sand beaches or swim in the crystal-clear waters of the lake. Picnic facilities are available, making it an ideal spot for an afternoon barbecue. In addition, there are great hikers' camping facilities, toilets and cold showers nearby.
Lake McKenzie is a magnificent year-round destination. The warmest months to visit are from November to March, where temperatures average around 30°C. The busiest time to visit is during school holidays, so if you want a quieter and more relaxed experience, it's best to avoid these periods.
Access to Fraser Island can be either by ferry or barge from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach. Once on the island, head to the eastern side of the island and take a four-wheel-drive to get to Lake McKenzie. It is important to note that only four-wheel drive vehicles are permitted on the island, so if you do not have one, you can rent one of these from any of the major cities in Queensland.
