Description
The Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens in West Mackay is a lush oasis of tropical flora from the Mackay and Whitsunday region, as well as native and exotic plants found in similar climates around the world.
Opened in 2003, this young botanic garden is a must-see destination for nature lovers visiting Mackay.
Visitors to the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens have access to over three kilometres of walking and cycling trails that wind through the gardens, wetlands and restored forest areas. Along the way, you'll find boardwalks that take you over wetland lagoons where you can spot a variety of bird life. The gardens also feature several unique themed areas, including the Fernery, the Regional Forest, rare and threatened flora of the tropical Shade Garden, and the Coal Garden that traces the evolution of plants and the importance of coal.
As you explore the gardens, you'll come across a number of art installations and information boards that provide additional entertainment and education. The gardens have taken great care to ensure that visitors have a well-rounded experience and learn about the various plants and habitats in the garden.
Take a break from your walk and visit the unique café and gallery that sits high above the wetland lagoon. The café provides an array of food and refreshments with indoor and outdoor dining options, while the gallery features rotating exhibitions of artwork and installations inspired by the garden's flora and fauna.
The Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens is open every day from 5:30am to 7:00pm. Admission is free, making it a great destination for budget-conscious travellers. You should aim to visit during the dry season, from April to October, to avoid the humidity and rain of the wet season.
