Description
The Macquarie Lighthouse, built in 1883, is Australia's first and longest-serving lighthouse site.
It is located on Dunbar Head, on Old South Head Road, Vaucluse in New South Wales. The lighthouse has aided seafarers since 1791 and was designed by James Barnet. It is managed by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust.
The Macquarie Lighthouse is an 8-sided concrete tower that stands at a height of 26 meters. Its light projects out to approximately 19 nautical miles. Inside the lighthouse, visitors can climb a narrow spiral staircase to a balcony that offers panoramic views of Sydney Harbour and the Pacific Ocean. Tours and climbs are available multiple times per day.
The lighthouse and its associated site were added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register in 1999 and the Commonwealth Heritage List in 2004. Its heritage listing recognizes its historical significance and representation of Australian architecture and maritime history. The lighthouse is also notable for its architectural and engineering excellence, as well as its early Palladian-inspired design and the oldest lighthouse keeper's quarters in Australia.
Visit the Macquarie Lighthouse to experience its rich history and stunning views of Sydney Harbour and the Pacific Ocean.
