Malabar Beach

Malabar Beach is a sublime beach in Malabar, New South Wales, Australia, that's tucked between Maroubra Beach to the north and Little Bay and La Perouse to the south.

The beach is flanked by the Randwick Golf Club and Malabar Headland on its right and left sides respectively. The picturesque sands of Malabar Beach stretch for approximately 200 meters. The beach also boasts of two boat ramps at both ends, as well as a stunning rock pool, which is located below the Randwick Golf Club towards the southern end.

Previously known as Long Bay Beach, Malabar Beach derived its new name after the infamous shipwreck of the MV Malabar in 1931. Malabar Beach had another claim to maritime history as four other ships met their fates on the headland – SS St Albans in 1882, Try One in 1947, SS Goolgwai in 1955, (and the unnamed barge again in 1955).

Malabar Beach had issues with water pollution resulting in negative effects on the health of swimmers. In 1957, concerned residents gathered for a protest meeting in the nearby Cromwell Park to push the Sydney Water Board into addressing the beach water pollution issues. In 1992, water quality at the beach improved dramatically with the introduction of a marine outfall that now pumps sewage 4.2 km out to sea. Additionally, the Randwick Council established lifeguard patrols while putting in place various amenities such as a barbecue area and playgrounds in Cromwell Park.

Malabar Beach is protected from the waves by its rocky headland on the left side, making it ideal for swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and snorkelling. Scuba
