Marangaroo is an Aboriginal word meaning "blue flowers". The locality name was approved on 13 June 1973 with initial surveying of the area for subdivision commencing in March 1977.

Marangaroo Golf Course opened in 1988, consisting of 18 holes designed by Murray Dawson. The course is also home to hundreds of kangaroos that live within the bush setting.

The Marangaroo Primary School was established in 1987 followed by Rawlinson Primary School in 2003 for the growing suburb.

The 24 hectare Marangaroo Conservation Reserve serves to conserve the regions native vegetation and local biodiversity. There are more than 600 plant species found in the reserve such as Yellow Candle Stick Banksia and Donkey Orchids.
