Description

Matilda Bay, also known as Crawley Bay, is a natural bay in the Swan River in Western Australia.

It is located adjacent to the Perth suburb of Crawley and has a rich history dating back to Captain Currie, the first colonial owner of the estate surrounding the bay. Today, Matilda Bay is a popular spot for leisure activities and recreation.

The bay stretches from Pelican Point to Mounts Bay Road below Kings Park. Matilda Bay Reserve, a recreational parkland between Hackett Drive and the river, is situated here, with the University of Western Australia directly across. The bay offers a fascinating cultural and historical past to explore.

Matilda Bay is home to notable landmarks such as the Matilda Bay Restaurant, Pelican Point Sea Scouts, and the Royal Perth Yacht Club. These landmarks have contributed to its popularity among both locals and visitors. The bay provides various facilities for water sports activities like rowing, sailing, and fishing, which are enjoyed by many. Additionally, the Matilda Bay parkland features attractions such as the Mounts Bay Sailing Club, the Eliza bronze sculpture, and Pelican Point, an important breeding sanctuary for migratory birds.

The bay is believed to have been named after Matilda (née Bennett), the wife of John Septimus Roe. Its history can be traced back to the 1800s when Captain Currie owned the estate surrounding the bay. After changing hands multiple times, the government acquired the estate in 1910 and later vested it in the University of Western Australia in 1912.
