Description

Maungauika/North Head Historic Reserve is a volcanic cone and Tupuna Maunga (ancestral mountain) forming a headland at the east end of the Waitemata Harbour in Auckland, New Zealand, in the suburb of Devonport.

As part of a 2014 Treaty of Waitangi claim settlement, the volcanic cone was officially named Maungauika, and the reserve unofficially renamed Maungauika / North Head Historic Reserve. The reserve is full of history and gorgeous views of Cheltenham beach, Waitemata Harbour, Auckland city, Mount Victoria Reserve, and the Hauraki Gulf.

Visitors can explore the military history of Maungauika/North Head through a series of loop tracks that introduce the tunnels, guns, searchlights, and defenses that were placed on the headland. The reserve is considered the most significant coastal defense site in New Zealand because of the size and variety of its defense installations, which span nearly 120 years. The Maungauika/North Head Historic Walk is a popular track that takes visitors through the reserve's military history. The walk is approximately 2.5 km long and takes about 1.5 hours to complete. Visitors can also explore the reserve's volcanic history by taking a walk to the summit of Maungauika. The walk is approximately 1 km long and takes about 30 minutes to complete.

The reserve is open year-round, and admission is free. Visitors can access the reserve by car, bus, or ferry. The ferry ride from downtown Auckland takes approximately 12 minutes. The reserve is an excellent destination for families, history buffs, and nature lovers. Visitors can enjoy a picnic on the reserve's grounds while taking in the stunning views of the harbor and the city.

In conclusion, Maungauika/North Head Historic Reserve is a unique destination that offers visitors a glimpse into New Zealand's military and volcanic history. The reserve's stunning views, rich history, and natural beauty make it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Auckland.
