Description

Moreton Island is a natural oasis located on the eastern side of Moreton Bay, South East Queensland, Australia.

It is the third largest sand island in the world, covering an area of approximately 186 square kilometres. The island is steeped in culture and history, with its origin as the traditional country of the Ngugi people and the presence of five lighthouses. Tangalooma, once a whaling station, is now home to the Tangalooma Island Resort and the Tangalooma Marine Education and Conservation Center (TMECC).

Geographically, Cape Moreton is the only rock outcrop on the island and is a popular spot for fishing and whale watching. Mount Tempest, the highest point on the island, stands at 280 metres and is known as the highest, stabilised, coastal sandhill in the world. Moreton Island also features freshwater lakes such as Blue Lagoon, Honeyeater Lake, Dolphin Lake, and Lake Trusiak.

The island has four localities and is a popular destination for day trippers, four-wheel driving, camping, recreational angling, and whale watching. Points of interest include Cape Moreton Light, Queensland's oldest lighthouse, as well as opportunities for bird watching, fishing, parasailing, and sand tobogganing.

Moreton Island is known for its unique flora and fauna, with over 200 species of birds and a variety of reptiles. The island is home to the Curlew Sandpiper, an internationally endangered species, and serves as a sanctuary for migratory birds and humpback whales.
