Description

Byron Bay is a picturesque town located in the far-northeastern corner of the state of New South Wales, Australia.

It is situated 772 kilometres north of Sydney and 165 kilometres south of Brisbane. The town has a permanent population of 4,959 and is the nucleus of Byron Shire, which has 29,209 residents.

Adjacent to the town is Cape Byron, the easternmost point of mainland Australia. It is about 3 km east of Byron Bay and projects into the Pacific Ocean. Cape Byron has a significant influence on the open beaches to its north and is a popular area for hiking and whale watching. It is part of the Cape Byron State Conservation Area.

Cape Byron offers a diverse range of activities. The Cape Byron Lighthouse, built in 1901, is a major attraction and stands on the most easterly point of the Australian mainland. The Cape Byron walking track is a 3.7-kilometre loop that winds through the Cape Byron State Conservation Area. Visitors can also explore the Cape Byron Marine Park, which supports both commercial and recreational fishing. To reach Byron Bay, visitors can travel by car, train, or plane. The closest airport is Ballina Byron Gateway Airport, a 30-minute drive from the town centre. Buses, shuttle services, and taxis are available from the airport. Driving from Brisbane or Sydney, visitors can take the Pacific Highway towards the Gold Coast and then follow the signs for Byron Bay.
