Moturau Hut is a backcountry hut located in Fiordland National Park, New Zealand.
It is situated alongside the beautiful Lake Manapouri, making it an ideal location for swimming, kayaking and enjoying the stunning scenery. The hut can accommodate up to 40 people and has basic facilities, including bunk beds, a cooking area, and toilets. While you're bedded down for the night, listen for the hooting of ruru (our native owl) and the brown kiwi's shrill whistles.
The Kepler Track, one of New Zealand's Great Walks, passes through Moturau Hut. The track was designed to showcase the best features of Fiordland, including mountains, native forest, waterfalls and glacier-carved valleys. The full 60 km loop takes 3-4 days to complete, but a shorter option is to hike from Te Anau to Moturau Hut, which takes about 2 days. The hike from Te Anau to Moturau Hut is approximately 16 km long and takes about 6-7 hours to complete. The track winds its way through beech forest, a gorge and a low saddle. Bellbirds, tomtits, grey warblers, fantails and chaffinches are common throughout the forest. Walk along river flats and a lowland podocarp forest before emerging on the shores of Lake Manapouri.
