Description
Mount Tennent, also known as Tharwa, is a 1,375 meter elevated mountain in the southern part of the Australian capital territory.
It was named after John Tennent, a notorious bushranger who had a hideout on the slopes in 1827. The mountain was previously called Mount Currie, but was renamed by Allan Cunningham after Captain Mark Currie, who led the first European expedition in the area in 1823.
Australia's Outward Bound HQ is located on Mount Tennent, serving as a camping ground for Outward Bound courses throughout the year. The mountain offers various walking and driving trails, attracting many visitors. Climbing from the base to the summit has become a popular recreational activity for the local community.
In 2004, ACTEW proposed building a large reservoir by damming the Gudgenby River below Mount Tennent as part of the Future Water Options Project. This project aimed to increase the water supply for Canberra and the ACT newline.
