Description

One gold rush pioneer - CY O'Connor, actually did all his work from Perth. As the gold rush blossomed, the area became desperate for water supply, and it was O'Connor's vision that created the Mundaring Weir and pipeline extending over 550 km across the desert.

The Weir is still a vital water resource for a vast inland area of our state. Towns such as Kalgoorlie only exist today because of fresh water supply, most of which comes from the 21 million cubic metre catchment area to collect it - Mundaring Weir. It's a great place to learn about one of the most staggering engineering feats of early Australia, one O'Connor himself didn't even live to see. There's a museum, nature walks nearby, and places for barbecues and picnics and of course, the dam wall, which you can walk along the top of quite safely on an enclosed walkway.
