Description
Myponga Reservoir, located approximately 60 km south of Adelaide, is a significant source of filtered water for southern metropolitan Adelaide and the southern coast area.
Fed by the Myponga River and other rivers in the Myponga catchment, the reservoir provides approximately 5% of the City of Adelaide's water supply. The idea of using the Myponga River catchment for water storage was first proposed in 1945. The construction of the reservoir later began in 1958, and it was completed in 1962.
Before the construction of the Myponga Water Treatment Plant in 1993, Myponga Reservoir water was used to supplement the Happy Valley Reservoir. In 1990, the Myponga Reservoir became the center of a controversial issue surrounding the disappearances of the Beaumont children, and Joanne Ratcliffe and Kirste Gordon. The search was based on the evidence against Bevan Spencer von Einem delivered by "Mr. B", a witness. Despite the search, no remains were found in the reservoir, nor was any other conclusive evidence discovered.
Today, Myponga Reservoir is not only a significant source of the City of Adelaide's water supply but it's also a popular recreational site for visitors to the area. With expansive water views surrounded by rolling hills and forests, it's an excellent spot for activities such as fishing, walking, and picnicking. It's a must-visit if you are in the area.
