Description

Naracoorte Caves National Park is a World Heritage site located in the southeast corner of South Australia.

The park is known for its extensive fossil record and spans over 6 km2 of remnant vegetation. Out of the 28 known caves in the park, only four are open to the public.

The limestone found in the park dates back 200 million years and was formed from coral and marine creatures. Over time, groundwater dissolved and eroded the limestone, creating the caves. The fossils found in the caves provide a record of the region's animals dating back over a million years.

Visitors to Naracoorte Caves National Park can enjoy a range of activities, including show cave tours, adventure caving, and specialty tours. The park also offers camping grounds, picnic areas, and a licensed café. The Wonambi Fossil Centre features displays of fossils and bones found in the caves.

The caves in the park are often not far below ground-level, and holes open up to create traps for animals. These fossil traps have preserved records of mammals and other land creatures that fell into the caves. Some areas with fossil-bearing silt are preserved for future research.

Plan a trip to Naracoorte Caves National Park to witness this unique natural wonder in person.
