Native Wells

The Native Wells Windorah, located approximately 90 kilometers west of Windorah along the Diamantina Development Road, offer travelers a chance to experience and learn about the native wells that have been a significant source of water for Aboriginal people in Australia for centuries.

Despite typically being dry, the wells provide an exciting stopover for travelers.

Visitors to the Native Wells Windorah can read about the culture and importance of the wells through the available information boards. They can also see the natural depressions that once held water, which are currently dry. The wells showcase the efforts made by the local people to maintain them, including cleaning debris and preventing animal contamination. A stick was also used to help animals climb out without drowning.

It is recommended to visit the Native Wells Windorah during the dry season, from April to September, when the wells are completely dry. During the wet season, from October to March, the wells can be full, making it difficult to spot the depressions and potentially rendering the stop inaccessible.

To reach the Native Wells Windorah, travelers can take the Diamantina Development Road, 90 kilometers west of Windorah. It is advisable to use a 4WD vehicle or a sturdy SUV due to the road conditions. Traveling during the dry season is recommended to avoid impassable roads and inaccessible information boards.
