Description
Nielsen Park, located in the Municipality of Woollahra local government area of New South Wales, is a heritage-listed historic site, park, and nature reserve.
It was designed by John Frederick Hilly, James Barnet, and the Office of the New South Wales Government Architect. The park is also known as Vaucluse Estate, Greycliffe Estate, and Greycliffe House. The surroundings of the park have great historical significance for their ability to demonstrate the course of cultural or natural history in New South Wales.
Nielsen Park used to be part of the traditional land of the Birrabirragal Aboriginal people. It was a popular occupation site for them due to its accessibility, fresh water supply, and fishing resources. The park contains extensive archaeological evidence of camping and fishing activities by the indigenous people. There are 14 recorded Aboriginal sites within the park, including middens, rock shelters, and aesthetic pieces. The park's landscape continues to hold cultural value for Aboriginal people.
Over time, the land went through different phases of private ownership with the arrival of colonists. It became part of the Vaucluse Estate, Woodmancote, and Greycliffe Estate. The historic 1851 residence, Greycliffe House, is located within the park grounds. After 1911, it served as a neonatal hospital and mothercraft residence before being used as an office for the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and a visitors' center.
