Description

Tane Mahuta is a giant kauri tree located in the Waipoua Forest of Northland Region, New Zealand.

It is the largest living kauri tree known to stand today and is estimated to be between 1,250 and 2,500 years old. The tree is named after Tane, the Maori god of forests and of birds. Tane Mahuta is a remnant of the ancient subtropical rainforest that once grew on the Northland Peninsula. Other giant kauri trees are found nearby, notably Te Matua Ngahere. Tane Mahuta is easily the most famous tree in all of New Zealand, even though other massive kauri trees are located nearby.

Visitors can take a short, easy walk to see Tane Mahuta on the Tane Mahuta Walk, which is suitable for buggies and children. The walk takes approximately 5 minutes one way. The forest is home to many other native species, including birds and insects, and offers a unique opportunity to experience New Zealand's natural beauty. The Waipoua Forest, where Tane Mahuta is located, is the largest remaining tract of native forest in Northland. It is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, offering a range of activities and accommodations. Visitors can explore the forest on foot, by bike, or by car, and can stay in nearby lodges, campsites, or holiday homes.

Tane Mahuta is a sacred and significant site for the Maori people, who have a deep spiritual connection to the forest and its trees. Visitors are asked to respect the cultural significance of the forest and to follow the guidelines provided by the Department of Conservation. In summary, Tane Mahuta is a must-see destination for anyone visiting New Zealand. Its size, age, and cultural significance make it a unique and awe-inspiring natural wonder. The Waipoua Forest offers a range of activities and accommodations, making it a great destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.
