A Breathtaking Stretch of Californian Coastline General Information: Big Sur is a rugged and picturesque stretch of coastline that spans approximately 90 miles from Carmel to San Simeon in central California, USA.

It is often referred to as one of the most beautiful and unique coastlines in the world, with its turquoise waters, towering redwoods, craggy cliffs, and secluded beaches. Big Sur has a mild, coastal Mediterranean climate and is located about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles.

What You Can See and Do: The main attraction of Big Sur is its stunning natural beauty and the many opportunities to experience it. Some popular things to see and do include:

  • Hiking: Big Sur is a hiker's paradise with a variety of trails for all skill levels, ranging from easy strolls to challenging hikes. Some popular trails include the Pfeiffer Falls Trail and the Ewoldsen Trail.
  • Beaches: There are many secluded beaches to explore in Big Sur, each with its own unique character. Some popular beaches include Pfeiffer Beach, Garrapata Beach, and Sand Dollar Beach.
  • Camping: There are several campgrounds in Big Sur, each offering a unique camping experience. Some popular campgrounds include Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park.
  • Wildlife Viewing: Big Sur is home to a variety of wildlife, including sea otters, harbor seals, and dolphins. It is also a prime location for bird watching, with over 400 species of birds recorded in the area.

When You Should Go: Big Sur is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on what you want to do. The summer months (June-August) are the busiest and most popular time to visit, with warm weather and clear skies. If you want to avoid the crowds, consider visiting in the shoulder season (April-May, September-October), when the weather is still pleasant and the crowds are thinner. Winter (November-March) is a quieter time to visit, with shorter daylight hours and cooler temperatures.

How to Get There: Big Sur is located on California's central coast, roughly midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The most convenient airports are San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), both of which have car rental facilities. From there, you can rent a car and drive to Big Sur along the Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1). The drive takes approximately 3 hours from San Francisco and 4.5 hours from Los Angeles, depending on traffic. Alternatively, you can take a scenic train ride along the coast on the Amtrak Coast Starlight from San Francisco or Los Angeles to Salinas or San Luis Obispo, and then rent a car to drive to Big Sur.
