Paulownia Estate: The family-owned boutique vineyard
Located in the Wairarapa Valley, Paulownia Estate is a nine-hectare family-owned boutique vineyard that specializes in producing distinctive wines.
Initially, the vineyard was a run-down dairy block purchased by Vaughan and Christine Paul in 1995. They aimed to plant a small vineyard and contract growing for local wineries. Over the years, they added blocks of Riesling, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Sauvignon Blanc to complete the vineyard.
Distinctive Wines from Unique Vineyard
Paulownia Estate is situated in the upper reaches of the Wairarapa Valley, on fertile alluvial loam soils overlying ancient river gravels. The vineyard tends to be a little cooler than its southern neighbours. This makes bud-burst in spring a few days later, and harvest can be two - three weeks later than in Martinborough. However, additional time on the vine helps to ensure that their fruit develops strong varietal characteristics that are carried through to very distinctive wines.

Paulownia Estate can be easily accessed by car from the region's main towns. Visitors who do not wish to drive can book a tour or opt for a cycler through the vines experience. The best time to visit the winery is during the harvest season from March to April, and September to November when the vines are budding. However, it is always best to contact the vineyard early to make arrangements for a visit.
