Rangiriri Paa

Rangiriri Pa is a historic site located in the rural community of Rangiriri, in the Waikato District and Waikato region of New Zealand's North Island.

The site is located on the Waikato River near Lake Waikare, and straddles an isthmus between the river and Lake Kopuera. Rangiriri is the site of the most important battle of the New Zealand Wars, fought in November 1863. A Maori defensive line had been constructed along a ridge between the river and the lake, which was breached by British forces after several days of fighting.

Rangiriri Pa was a major defence site for Maori during the Invasion of the Waikato, and is legally protected as an historic reserve. The pa site was restored as part of work on the Waikato Expressway, and now features a visitor centre and interpretive displays. Visitors can learn about the cultural significance of the area and the history of the New Zealand Wars. The Rangiriri Cultural and Heritage Centre, located on Rangiriri Road, houses a unique collection of memorabilia related to the area's history and culture. The centre is open to visitors and offers guided tours of the Rangiriri Pa site.

Rangiriri is easily accessible by car, located on State Highway 1, although the highway now bypasses the town. The Rangiriri statistical area had a population of 1,833 at the 2018 New Zealand census, with 477 households.
