Description

The Remutaka Cycle Trail is a popular attraction for visitors to the Wellington Region in New Zealand.

This 110km trail is part of Nga Haerenga - The New Zealand Cycle Trail and is one of New Zealand's Great Rides. The trail takes you on a journey along an historic railway line through the Remutaka Ranges, then exploring Wairarapa farmland and rugged coastlines on the other side. The trail is maintained through a partnership between four councils, two regional tourism organisations, and a number of private landowners in the greater Wellington region.

The Remutaka Cycle Trail is divided into four sections that can be completed in 2-3 days. The trail is suitable for a range of ages and abilities and is open to mountain bikers, walkers, and horse riders on the Rail Trail section before the tunnels. Easy access points along the Hutt Valley and Wairarapa sections make it easy to tailor a shorter ride for individual abilities and interests. Visitors can discover the old rail bridge or tunnel and enjoy camping, swimming, and fishing. Dogs are allowed on the trail but must be kept under control at all times.

Cycle Remutaka is a bike hire, cycle tours, accessories, shuttles, and bag transfers service that exists to bring your Remutaka Cycle Trail adventure to life. They offer advice and guided tours. The Wellington and Wairarapa regions are well served by transport, accommodation, and other operators, making it easy to plan your ride.

The Remutaka Cycle Trail offers a variety of landscapes, from river, forest, and coastal scenery to Wairarapa wine-country. Visitors can rejoin the Remutaka Cycle Trail and follow the easy-riding Hutt River Trail through the leafy suburbs of Lower Hutt. They can stop for a coffee and scone at Bellbird Eatery before exploring The Dowse Art Museum. Then join the neighbourhoods you’ll be cycling past to cool off at popular swimming spots like Taita Rock along the Hutt River – a favourite spot for decades.
