Description

The Paddle Steamer Waimarie is a historic riverboat that operates on the Whanganui River in New Zealand.

It is the only coal-fired paddle steamer still in operation in the country and offers a unique river-related experience. The Waimarie Operating Trust provides a range of cruises over the warmer months, including themed and private charter cruises by arrangement. All cruises operate on Te Awa Tupua, the Whanganui River, onboard the iconic Paddle Steamer Waimarie.

A cruise aboard the Paddle Steamer Waimarie is an authentic way to experience the Whanganui River's scenery and history. The two-hour cruise takes you through the beautiful Whanganui River, where you can enjoy the stunning scenery and learn about the area's history. The riverboat is also available for private charters for weddings, engagements, birthdays, work, and Christmas parties.

The Paddle Steamer Waimarie has a rich history. It was built in 1899 by Yarrow & Co. in London and transported to New Zealand in kitset form to be assembled at Whanganui. She operated on the Whanganui River for 49 years before being laid up. In 1952 she sank at her moorings and lay in the mud for the next 40 years. In 1993, a group of enthusiasts formed the Whanganui Riverboat Restoration and Navigation Trust to restore the Waimarie to her former glory. The restoration took six years, and the Waimarie was relaunched in 2000.

The Paddle Steamer Waimarie is located at 1A Taupo Quay, Whanganui, 4500, Whanganui Central, New Zealand. The pricing for the cruise is $55.00 for adults and $25.00 for children (15 years and under). The Whanganui Riverboat Centre, which houses the Waimarie, is open to the public and features a museum with exhibits on the history of the Waimarie and the Whanganui River. The Waimarie Operating Trust has declared that it aligns with health and hygiene measures derived from government guidelines to help protect against COVID-19.
