Organ Pipes National Park (OPNP) is a conservation park located in the Central region of Victoria, Australia.
It is known for its emerging wildlife conservation and environmental preservation efforts. The park is part of the Victoria Park system and is surrounded by the Calder Highway and the cities of Hume and Brimbank. Jacksons Creek runs through the park, exposing Pleistocene volcanic rocks.
The park's landforms are part of the Keilor Plains, which were created by the incision of Jacksons Creek into lava flows that erupted millions of years ago. These lava flows cooled and formed hexagonal basalt columns, locally known as the "organ pipes."
Tourists are drawn to the park for its unique geological formations, including the Organ Pipes, Tessellated Pavement, Rosette Rock, Scoria Cone, and Sandstone layer. Over time, Jacksons Creek has cut through the basaltic plains, revealing these geological structures. The park also exposes a prehistoric buried creek valley with marine fossils from the Silurian period.
In recent years, the park has focused on re-vegetation and the propagation of native species. The park administration, with assistance from The Friends of Organ Pipes, has created ecosystems with different bio-systems reflecting the underlying geology. Over 124 indigenous plant species, including rare and threatened species, have been identified in the park.
The park is home to various native mammal, avifauna, reptile, and amphibian species. The introduction of native vegetation has led to the proliferation of certain faunal species, such as the sugar glider.
As a popular tourist destination, the park offers attractions of geological significance, including the Organ Pipes, Tessellated Pavement, and Rosette Rock.
