The river descends about 83 metres over its 15 kilometres course, making it an open semi-mature wave dominated barrier estuary, which is a spectacle to witness. The river's catchment area spans over 296 square kilometres, with a volume of 9,774 megalitres over a surface area of 4.7 square kilometres at an average depth of 2.2 metres. Princes Highway, a major road that runs between Melbourne and Sydney, passes over the river south of Pambula, making it easily accessible. One can enjoy various water activities here, including boating, fishing, kayaking or a picnic with their family.

Pambula River Mouth is a wildlife haven with various bird species, including shorebirds, waterfowl and seabirds found here.
