Description
Penguin Island is a 12.5-hectare (31-acre) island off the coast of Perth, known for its large colony of little penguins.
Visitors can reach the island by ferry or by walking across a sandbar, although the sandbar walk is not recommended due to changing weather conditions. The island has picnic areas, composting toilets, lookout points, and walking paths. Some areas are off-limits to protect wildlife and reduce erosion. The island features cliffs, caves, beaches, and natural bridges. The little penguin colony is the main attraction, with approximately 250 penguins. The colony has declined due to prey depletion, climate change, and human threats. Penguin Island is also home to a variety of other seabirds, including a large colony of pelicans. Despite the recent cancellation of a new discovery center, Penguin Island remains a popular destination for tourists and locals.
